Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Sweeps

Sweeps in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be awfully tricky. If you don’t shift the persons weight just right or block the right balance points, you’re not going to finish the sweep. Getting under their center of balance to sweep them takes pin-point accuracy. And your practice of sweeps should reflect that idea.

When practicing your sweeps, find the point, or points, that give you the most leverage. In my opinion, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sweeps should be easy, at least in practice. If I have to struggle a lot to get a sweep while just practicing, then something isn’t right. Either the sweep doesn’t have merit, or I’m not finding the right leverage and center of gravity.

Pay close attention to where your opponent’s balance is, where they have the opportunity to post and balance, and which directions you have the opportunity to take them. You should be experimenting with these sweeps in your BJJ practice. Ask yourself: can I take my opponent more than one way? Can I shift my body, or get under my opponent in a different way that would make the sweep easier?

Play with these ideas, and find the path of least effort on your part. Make your opponent feel light and don’t stop experimenting until the sweep is almost effortless.
