Developing Your Strenghts In BJJ
Think about your strengths in grappling, and write these strengths down, making a list. Figure out how you can use these strengths to make your game even stronger.
For instance; when in bottom side mount, you may be able to catch people in half-guard a lot when they go for the mount. You may also be very good at keeping them there, but not so good at escaping bottom half-guard. Therefore, it would be a pretty good idea to develop your half-guard reversals and guard recovery from half-guard. That would improve your game a lot.
Perhaps you're really good at defending from the turtle position. Then work escapes from bottom that bring you to the turtle position. Also, work submissions and reversal from the turtle to enhance this strength that you have.
For you guys that have other martial arts training, how can you use those skills in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? There has to be something that can transfer over. If you do Muay Thai, use the Muay Thai clinch to control your opponents from standing. Or use the clinch from the knees to defend, to set up your takedowns, or just to wear out you opponent.
Combinations
Develop you combinations using your list of strengths. Separate those strengths into submissions, reversals, passes, etc. Find those strong submissions and figure out how you can combine them with other strong points that you have.
For example, combine a guard pass straight into a submission that you like, or a reversal to a submission, or one blocked submission to another. Once you have these combos worked out, find a partner to work them with and practice, practice, practice.
