What is the best form of martial art for a woman?

I am 62. I am not in bad condition, and am very interested in learning a form of martial arts that is best for me. I have been told by a master in martial arts that because I love to dress up, heels and all, I should learn something (I don't know the proper spelling), called 'wen doe'. Like I said, that is what it sounded like he said. He also told me that in America, its not taught correctly. However! I went looking for other forms of self defense because I really want to learn something for my safety.

I read on the internet that Jiu Jitsu is really great for 'women', and also kick boxing...but! I was told that women who are 'older' are not allowed to learn kick boxing, as the instructors are worried that they will get a heart attack!

Please let me know what you think is my best form of the art to learn, that will keep a lady very safe, very secure, and strong.

Short of carrying a gun, I have found nothing to help me except a tall and strong male, but they cant always be with me 24/7...sadly!

Hi Patricia. Thanks for the question. I hope I can help you out. Both Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing will be great for self defense as well as fitness. I highly recommend that you try out and participate in both provided that your instructor knows enough about you to help meet your specific needs.

As far as safety is concerned, the most important thing to remember is to practice at a pace that is comfortable for you. Kickboxing is fine so long as you do it at a pace that doesn't cause you discomfort, pain or trouble breathing (the class should be tough, but bearable). The same goes for Jiu-Jitsu and although this class is a different style of martial art (grappling instead of striking), the same idea of training at a comfortable pace still applies.

Be sure that wherever you go they offer a free introductory lesson and consultation to discuss exactly what your goals and needs are before you try out the class. NEVER just jump into a class without doing this first and make sure the instructors really understand what it is you need from them.

Bottom line, I believe everyone can benefit from training in Martial Arts, specifically Kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu (I'm biased of course). Just remember to modify the Martial Arts to fit your goals and needs, not the other way around. I hope this helps you out and let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
