A Brief History of Muay Thai Boxing

Muay Thai Boxing

Muay Thai boxing is the national martial art of Thailand. Its origins can be traced back several hundred years, and it was developed with the intent of using the whole human body as a weapon. However, where the discipline originated from is a subject that is debated amongst scholars. When Thailand’s capital city of Siam was raided by invaders in the 14th century, much of Muay Thai’s recorded history was lost. The volumes that were saved have now been preserved and are considered national treasures in Thailand.

What is known for certain is that Muay Thai boxing utilizes the human body to mimic the weapons used in war. The hands are considered akin to the dagger and sword. The forearms and shins are hardened during training for the purpose of acting as shields, and elbows are used to fell opponents like a hammer or heavy mace. The knees and legs are likened to being the staff and axe. Together, all of these elements act as a single unit.

As a martial art, Muay Thai boxing is thought to have developed over several centuries as nomadic tribes migrated south. Survival was difficult, and tribes had to be on constant guard from attack. An emphasis was placed on proper power and technique, and as the craft developed, it was handed down from father to son. Over the centuries, it eventually became a part of mandatory training for the Thai military. Veterans of the army would return home to their villages and begin to teach the sport to local villagers, and its popularity spread from there.

Muay Thai boxing has a rich and storied history, and it continues to remain popular today.
